The Art of Japanese Tea Ceremony

The Japanese tea ceremony, known as chanoyu or sado, is a traditional ritual influenced by Zen Buddhism in which powdered green tea, or matcha, is ceremonially prepared and served to guests.

History

The tea ceremony has its roots in Chinese tea culture, but it was in Japan that it developed into a highly refined art form. The practice was popularized by Sen no Rikyū in the 16th century, who established the principles of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility.

The Four Principles

  1. Wa (和) - Harmony
  2. Kei (敬) - Respect
  3. Sei (清) - Purity
  4. Jaku (寂) - Tranquility

These principles guide not just the tea ceremony, but also the way of life for practitioners.
